Air Conditioning

Air conditioner or heat pump?

The operating principle of the two categories is the same. The main difference is the means by which the heat reaches the indoors. The term ‘heat pump’ has come to be used for air to water units, while ‘air-conditioners’ is used for air to air units.

Types of Air Conditioners

  • Mini-split. The most popular units with one indoor unit. Efficient and easy to install.
  • Multi-split. With up to 4 internal units, for semi-professional use.
  • VRF. For a large number of indoor units, for commercial use.

Choosing an Air Conditioner

Choosing the ideal air conditioner for your space depends on the features you are most interested in:

  • Cooling and heating power (nominal and maximum)
  • Cooling efficiency (SEER) and heating efficiency (SCOP)
  • Noise level
  • Smart functions and WiFi connectivity
  • Air quality management
  • Dimensions and aesthetics

Cooling efficiency (EER) and heating efficiency (COP)

The efficiency expresses the ratio of energy transferred to electricity consumed. For example, if the COP is equal to 3, then by using 1 kW of electricity, the space is heated with a power of 3 kW. The efficiency is not constant, but depends on the ambient and water temperatures.

The seasonal efficiency rating, SCOP and SEER, is an average value of the efficiency rating for an entire season.
SEER is defined in the same way for all of Europe, while SCOP is usually defined for medium and warm climates, such as Greece. This is why there are usually 2 SCOP values for the same model.

Power

Air conditioner capacity is usually measured in BTU/h with typical models at 9,000, 12,000, 18,000 and 24,000 BTU/h. In reality, however, not all air conditioners have the same maximum output. You can find the maximum power for heating and cooling usually measured in watts.

Other important functions and features

Filters, such as activated carbon filters, help maintain higher air quality in the room.

The self-cleaning function helps to eliminate harmful substances and microorganisms from the room air exchanger.

Wi-Fi connectivity allows remote control and management via Smart Home applications.
